With our
All you can eat sushi night on Wednesdays growing increasingly popular, we decided to focus today's topic on the beautiful creation that is
Sushi.
Sushi (meaning "sour tasting") is a Japanese food consisting of cooked vinegared rice combined with other ingredients. These beautifully crafted morsels use traditional Japanese techniques to create not only a fresh and tasty bite but arguably a much healthier alternative when dining out. The flavors remain delightfully simple however traditional condiments such as Ginger, Wasabi and soy sauce enhance the experience and bring out various elements in these dishes.
Norimaki refers to the type of sushi most commonly enjoyed by
Zuri patrons and feature predominantly on our All you can eat sushi menu. Seaweed is wrapped around sushi rice into a log shape with the central filling a choice of fish, fresh vegetables, tofu or chicken. The roll is then delicately sliced into individual rounds suitable for dipping with chopsticks.
Nigiri is quite visually distinctive using fresh cuts of fish such as tuna, salmon and scallop and are gently layered over a small bed of rice. Often topped with a little Japanese mayo.
Aburi Sushi is similar again but the meat is gently seared under heat.
Raw meat or fish sliced and served by itself is
sashimi.
The traditional condiments we serve also hold their own purpose and therefore make the experience even more appealing.
Wasabi is a Japanese plant similar to horseradish, the root of which is made into a paste. The paste is famously spicy, but has a different quality from spicy peppers that makes it stimulate the nose more than the tongue. This opens up one’s receptiveness to the finer and more complex flavors in sushi, which are actually smelled rather than tasted on the tongue.
Another root that enhances the dining experience,
Ginger, is often served alongside the wasabi. The fresh root is sliced very thin and pickled. This provides a sharp, sweet, and refreshing flavor. The ginger served with sushi has a strong flavor and has anti-inflammatory properties that stimulate digestion and can assist an upset stomach.
When trying sushi for the first time, there are a few strategies for guaranteeing a scrumptious meal. Begin with flavors you’re already familiar with. Raw salmon and scallops, for example, taste very similar to their cooked counterparts. Our chicken karage (fried chicken) and cooked tuna sushi are both great options for those with a more modern palate who otherwise would not appreciate the flavor of raw fish. Our spicy tofu sushi is also especially popular for its tasty chilli flavour, even by those who are typically meat eaters.
So even if you are not an adventurous soul, Sushi at
Zuri caters for a variety of tastebuds and the experience itself is well worth a visit.
